Iseult baked bread from acorns and spikelets of false oat.

She stewed fungi that protrude like visors from the pines.

She dug wild barley, sorghum, darnel and melick,

dandelion shoots and burdock root. Her hands

grew hard, nails caked with granitic dust.

My Queen followed a black Monarch to sarnica,

stalking jaggedly, so it would not hide and fold its wings.

She unearthed argenta where the stones are dappled and sweaty.

She dug up self-heal at the springhead, there where the woods

feel emptiest. From comfrey she distilled an elixir

that soothed the throbbing of my wound. She made a mint poultice

that calmed my fear of death, and a balm of verbena

so I no longer feared my own strength, or hers, or the enemy’s.

She found black currants, and tart green gooseberries

striated with stretch-marks, a feast, but ruinous.

My love’s skin grew slack, her eyes enormous,

and she was my only mirror—in the snowmelt pools

desire erased my face and etched in a fool’s beseeching gape.
